Ideas for New Baby
- Have all family members write a letter to the baby that can be saved and opened at a special future occasion.
- Gather baby's keepsakes and frame them in a shadowbox or collectors box. They have so much more meaning when you can see them displayed.
- Start a birthday letter box on their first birthday. Write a card to them every year and include their party invitation, cards and gift list.
- Start a collection for them and add to it each year- figurine, birthstone, jewelry, stamps or coins. Perhaps start to pass on a collection of your own.
Ideas for Children
- Use a photo album to make them a" who's who" family book they can look through to become familiar with different family members and relatives. Also try cutting out photos and attach them to magnets for the child to play with on the front of the refrigerator.
- Make a portfolio to keep their artwork using two pieces of posterboard or display board.
- Keep a little journal or notecards to jot down the funny, cute, silly things they do. Make it a gift for when they are older.
- Write a poem, story or song about themselves, or find one that has a special meaning and display it as a reminder for you and for them.
- Collect their old small toys- happy meal size items and glue them on a wooden wreath base and spray paint. Hang as a wreath for the holidays or make as a picture frame.
- Save favorite worn clothing to make a keepsake patchwork quilt.
- Have siblings, cousins, friends do a homemade gift exchange. Encourage their gift to be thoughtful and meaning for the recipient.
- Encourage a collection and help them add to it at gift-giving occasions.
- Give them something of yours they really treasure- a figurine, jewelry, memento etc.. Present it in a very special way. Start an annual tradition of giving one item each Christmas or birthday or perhaps on a milestone birthday or occasion.
Ideas for Parents
- For an anniversary, gather siblings to collect childhood memories and type them out in keepsake album or make a cd for the parents.
- Have children make an "All-About-Mom" or "All-About-Dad" book. Children's perspective on the parents will be amusing, enlightening and memorable.
- Start a Mother's or Father's Day journal that you write or draw in each year. A single journal with years full of great feelings, as well as a remarkable timeline.
- Frame photos in a timeline of their married life together.
Ideas for Grandparents
- Give the gift of each grandchild teaching their grandparent something "new." Getting on facebook, burning a CD, playing their favorite sport....
- For older grandparents, especially those at a distance, enlist family members to join a "Letter-of-the-Month" club. Everyone committs to mailing one letter a month- it is an amazing gift to someone who needs connection.
- Have grandchildren draw a portrait of Grandma/Grandpa and have it framed.
- Handprint gifts are always popular-so many to choose from.
- Go with them on a trip down memory lane. Take them to a special place from the past and relive their earlier days with them.
- Help them record their life stories, use a book, software program or come up with your own questions and record them for future generations.
- Make a collage frame with photos of grandparent and grandchild/children. Make a special time or place for an annual photo you can add to the frame.
